RAMMED EARTH HOUSE,

LAFAYETTE CA.

This four-bedroom house is well integrated with the surrounding landscape due to the use of 18-inch ‘pisé’ rammed earth walls, which are composed of a mix of decomposed granite and concrete. The result is a highly insulated, air-tight rock wall that keeps the house cool during the intense heat of the summer months. The high thermal mass of the wall, in combination with hydronic radiant heating built into the hand-scored concrete floors, keeps the house warm throughout the winter. The structure incorporates architectural elements from the Mediterranean, Greece and North Africa, which work together to create a warm and tranquil atmosphere.
